Biography

Karianne Bergen is an Assistant Professor in the Data Science Institute and Department of Earth, Environmental & Planetary Sciences. Her work has focused on machine learning for pattern recognition and discovery in large, complex sensor data sets, with recent applications to earthquake monitoring. Her research interest is in scientific machine learning, including knowledge-guided and interpretable learning for the physical sciences.  

Dr. Bergen received her Sc.B. in Applied Mathematics from Brown University and her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computational and Mathematical Engineering from Stanford University.  She did her postdoctoral training at Harvard University as a Data Science Initiative (HDSI) Postdoctoral Fellow in Computer Science and Earth & Planetary Sciences. She also previously worked as a data scientist at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.
