Early-Career Breakthrough Research Awards

The DSI Early-Career Award program recognizes the contributions and professional growth of Brown's early career faculty members working in the area of or areas adjacent to data science.

The Data Science Institute is launching a new Early-Career Award program to recognize the contributions and professional growth of Brown's early career faculty members working in the area of or areas adjacent to data science.

The awards will be divided into three categories –  Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences, and Humanities and Social Science. Recipients will receive an award of $2K that they can use as discretionary research and/or teaching funds and be honored at a DSI celebration at the beginning of the Spring of 2026.

Eligibility

We encourage nominations from faculty, chairs, and/or deans across Brown's campus, including those with appointments at Brown's Medical School. Eligible candidates must be tenure-track, but not yet tenured, early-career researchers at Brown, including in the Medical School, who have made substantial contributions to data science or have leveraged the tools of data science to considerably advance their disciplines. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

Review Process

A committee of DSI faculty and staff with relevant qualifications for each award category will evaluate the nominated researcher’s submission. Reviewers will heavily weigh research impact, innovation, and quality, as exemplified by the nomination, the applicant's CV, and the applicant's representative publications and software products. The nomination should make clear how data science is advanced or contributes to the research. The committee will also consider teaching, service, outreach, and policy contributions to Brown and the greater community.

Documents Required for Submission

Nominators are asked to provide the following on behalf of the applicant:

  • Up to 2-page nomination letter from a Brown faculty member highlighting the applicant’s achievements.
  • CV of applicant.
  • 500-word statement of research accomplishments. Please write for a general scientific audience.
  • 150-word explanation of how the research relates to Data Science.

Deadline

November 1, 2025.  Awards will be announced in early 2026.
