In this role, Andras will develop activities to promote engagement between diverse units and organizations on and off-campus, helping to create new research collaborations and training opportunities to benefit data science research and education at Brown. Already an instructor of DATA1030: Hands-on Data Science in DSI’s master’s program since 2019, Andras will also be the lead instructor for DATA 2040: Deep Learning.  In addition, he will support Data Science master’s students in their practicum projects and career-search processes.  

Andras started at Brown in December 2015 as a Senior Data Science Associate in the Data Science Practice team of the Computing and Information Services. The DSP later merged into Brown’s Center for Computation and Visualization and he became a Lead Data Scientist in 2017. During his six years at Brown, he has worked with university administrators, faculty members, postdocs, and graduate students on various data science and machine learning problems. Andras was born and raised in Hungary and he is an astrophysicist by training. He got his PhD from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany, and he was a postdoctoral researcher at MIT before he started to work at Brown. 

Andras will be taking over from Dan Potter, who served as DSI’s Director of Industry Relations since the Initiative’s inception in 2017. As a Professor of the Practice of Data Science and founding faculty member of the DSI, Dan was instrumental in developing DATA 2050, the practicum course, and developed and taught DATA1030, DATA1050: Data Engineering, and DATA 2040: Deep Learning. Dan also helped implement many other aspects of the DSI  master’s program. We are extremely grateful to Dan for his contributions to DSI’s success, including building strong industry and on-campus partnerships, playing an important role in the Brown Datathon, and helping to place master’s students in both practicums and post-graduation employment. We wish Dan continued success. Dan's plans include leading Ars Empirica, a data science-focused non-profit, and investment management activities at Disciplined Alpha, LLC a Boston-based hedge fund.
